Statement of intent final draft

This statement outlines the development of a magazine and a unique TV crime drama. Inspired by "Playboi Carti," the magazine will delve into the fusion of music, crime, and teenage rebellion. The TV show, tailored for a wider audience, features a diverse cast and deviates from typical crime conventions by focusing on storytelling over violence. The Netflix series, centred on Playboi Carti, promises to engage viewers with its diverse themes, from theft to music to teen relationships.

In my 3-minute clip, the audience will be introduced with the opening of the first episode. It will start off with the Netflix introduction, followed by a custom-made TV intro using a wide range of editing techniques and camera shots. While the intro might be different from typical crime shows, it's designed to hook the audience from the start and immerse them in the story. After the intro, meet the main cast: Jordan, Reggie, and Y.S, all 18-year-old aspiring musicians inspired by Playboi Carti. The all-male cast aims to challenge industry norms and stay true to personal experiences, prioritising relatability for the audience over conforming to non-target demographics.

The clip features many crime and drama conventions. If all goes as planned, this scene will effectively immerse the audience with action codes, enigma codes, and cliffhangers. I intend to utilise lighting as an enigma code; for instance, when outside, the lighting will be lowkey, and the camerawork/editing will transition from slow-paced to fast-paced to build suspense. Due to Ofcom restrictions with the T.V show being made suitable for 12 and onwards, effectively using makeup, such as depicting blood, will be more challenging. As a replacement, I will use the introduction as well as the location in order to fully immerse the audience to make them feel as if they are in the scene. Instead of relying on makeup and facial expressions to tell the story I will use location and actions that the audience will enjoy and hopefully relate to. The main location will be at my local skatepark where the cast meet the ‘gang’ that starts off the whole story.

Theorist Inspirations

Roland Barthes Semiotics-  In order to promote the T.V show, we will use signs and symbols that the artist which the show is focused on  uses in his music promotion. This Varies from graffiti on well seen walls, Instagram posts, Billboards… This is going to be done for the audience to gain that sense of familiarity with the usual rollout of the artists advertisement

Jean Baudrillard Postmodernism- Hip-Hop Heist has strong postmodern conventions with a main focus on the current change in the music industry and with comparisons from the past to now. This show is also focused on how this change forms new identities for these artists which is another significant factor in postmodernism.

Stuart hall reception theory- The preferred reading of my show will be that Hip-Hop Heist is a unique crime drama which follows a storyline of the lives of teenagers. They might not follow the typical crime conventions however it can still be seen as a crime drama. This is contrasted by the oppositional readings formed by the audience viewing the show leaning more towards being a documentary.

My magazine, like the show, is aimed at a niche audience, primarily teenagers to young adults who are typical Playboi Carti fans. As a member of this demographic, I aim to offer readers an engaging and authentic experience, immersing them in the fictional narrative through the characters' perspectives. Centred on the celebrity featured in my TV show 'Hip-Hop Heist,' the magazine maintains relevance, ensuring it covers essential topics for its target audience.

Since ‘Magnolia Magazine’ is a magazine heavily made for this artist's fan base, the front cover might not resemble typical Western magazine designs and will most likely consist of a photo of him. Whilst using a picture of him as the main flash will mean that one of my images won’t be one that I took myself, it also will work alot better than any other ideas I have since it will clearly express the magazine's audience and what it will contain.

On the other hand, emphasising the link between the magazine and the show is the primary focus. While the magazine will be unique compared to traditional ones, it will still include standard conventions like bar codes, page numbers, main flash, and titles, ensuring familiarity for readers.

The magazine will feature exclusive interviews with the show's cast, alongside in-depth Fan Q&A’s  delving into the motivations, challenges, and goals of beloved characters. By offering readers insight into the characters' minds, I aim to deepen their connection to the show's world.
