Coursework Planning

1) Choose at least three TV dramas similar to your concept and watch at least one scene from each. Make bullet-point notes on everything you watch, commenting on camerawork, editing, sound and mise-en-scene.

Blinded by the light

  • Low angle shot- Javed is running there's a low shot angle that frames and tracks him
  • Lighting- Variety of colour, there's use of back lighting as the streetlights are what illuminates everything in this shot
  • tracking shot-camera captures javed from behind and follows him throughout his run as the manages to outrun the camera which can indicate a sense of freedom
The equalizer

  • High angle shot looks down on the main character from the celing as hes in the restaurant, the shot conveys the size difference and makes him look alot smaller than the opposition
  • Low key lighting-creates contrast between the light and shadow, constantly switching between the two
  • establishing shot- captures the whole resturant giving a panoramic view of the resturant that builds tension and builds up the spacial dynamic showing how close they are to each other but dont know what will happen unlike the audience, a key action code.
Luther
  • Close up shots- they keep.zooming in on his face most likely to highlight the facial expressions hes showing as well as the suspect hes following this helps build up tension as we are looking at their body language and facial expressions which is also an enigma code.
  • Lighting- The lighting is very dark and helps build up the 'ominous' atmosphere once again suggesting something is going to happen being an action code, this also could have been done to represent their roles as both their jobs require doing dirty work
Money Heist
  • Location-the scene is set inside the Royal Mint of Spain's printing room, which is a visually captivating environment with rows of printing machines and stacks of money. This all helps set the base of the genre and help ideentify what the focus of the show is about (heists and money)
  • They use a montage related scene where there is music playing and the editing is being cut on beats, this is visually pleasing to the audience and helps lighten the mood as a contrast to most crime dramas
2) Write a script for your TV drama scene. You'll find guidance for writing a script in the BBC Writers' Room (click on the Script Library to read real examples of professional TV scripts). Lay it out like a real script (see right) - it will add a level of professionalism to your production.

The scene i'm recording won't contain any dialogue as its an intro of a show rather than an actual scene. I'm working on a script which is similar to a shot list where rather than explain dialouge, ill explain what is shown. (script

3) Write a shot list containing EVERY shot you plan to film AND additional shots to create flexibility when editing. These additional shots are often close-ups, cutaways, alternative angles or similar. I advise using a simple table on Microsoft Word to set out your shot list - you can find an example here

e4) Plan your mise-en-scene: what iconography are you including to ensure your audience understands the genre? Plan your cast, costume, make-up, props, lighting and setting. For this preliminary task, use just one location to keep it simple.

Cast-
The main cast will consist of two boys( myself being one of them) and one girl these three are the protagonists of the series and are aged 17-18. We aim to make this as relatable as possible so with the actors being the same age as the targeted audience, I'll of course make them follow a script however id also like them to act like themselves as much as possible so that this doesnt feel like one 'fake crime drama' but also be able to find a sense of personal identity within the cast.

Costume- typical street wear, This drama is supposed to be made in order for the youth to feel like they can relate with the show so i have to try and make the characters as accurate of a representation of teenagers as i can. Street wear is a way for the youth to express themselves and is unique to each individual. With this crime drama, one of our main objectives is to truely engage with the audiences and with a teenage targeted audience, I feel personally that this might be the best way.

makeup-there probably wont be much use of makeup, the most i can think of makeup being used is by using water to make it seem like characters are wearing but due to the age rating we were given, there not much that we can do with makeup like cuts and whatnot. Other ways i could use makeup is to record around the halloween period and use peoples costumes which consist of makeup to be part of the recording. This can be done to represent the secrecy of people in our production and how they hide themselves.

props-there  Once again i am restricted by the age rating from the props i can use so i will have props like a USB stick, computers, a skateboard ect... Typical teenage inventory.

lighting-There will on very rare occasions be high key lighting as i aim to focus on back lighting and low key lighting. I will be more oftenly be recording outside when the darkness hits and refrain from recording during the day whilst the sun is out in order to add the eerie and ominous atmospheres to my scenes.

setting-The setting will be very diverse as the scene i'm recording is an introduction but examples of places you might see are parks, teenage rooms, schools, concerts....

5) Plan a shooting schedule that will ensure everything is filmed by the deadline. Include when, where, who is required and what shots you will complete at each time/location.

When- I do have a quite busy throuought the week we are supposed to film as im taking part of an apprenticeship programme from tuesday-friday which is very time consuming however i can record some clips as i'll be in central london but nothing that'll heavily impact my clip. I'll try to record on the monday and the weekend and hopefully in the second week where we were given for the editing, i can use that to record clips.

Where-I'll be recording in places where suspicious activities often happen such as empty parking lots, dark allyways, skateparks... As my idea isn't exactly a traditional crime drama, ill have to emphasise the codes that show my product belongs to that genre.

Who- myself and two of my other friends, there might also be one additional person to help with recording
