2) Note down the design elements you notice in each front cover example you research and look for aspects you can use in your own work (e.g. camera shots, page design or cover lines).
They often use pictures of sneak peeks or behind-the-scenes photos showcasing the production process, set design, costumes, and special effects used in popular crime drama series to intrest the readers and show whats inside of the magazine.
On top of that, they show short reviews or comments about new and upcoming crime drama series, episodes, or related media, helping readers stay informed about the latest releases in the genre.
to intrest viewers who are already familiar with the actors, they also use pictures or mentions of the main cast members or characters from well-known crime drama series or other genres and then talk about their role or any controversy
3) What key conventions can you find across different types of front cover - e.g. title placement, cover lines, main flash or cover line, date/price/barcode etc.
The titles aren't always clear and bold like in traditional magazine covers. Some could argue however that this is a technique used by these magazines to rather than draw attention to the title, the viewers attention will be directed to the main flash so they will automatically know who the main actor is and what the main tv show is in the selected magazine.
The colour scheme is also effectivley used with a consistencey of red which is the biggest colour that draws the human eyes attention. by using a somber colour like black and adding a bright colour like red, this is sure to grab the viewers attention.
Furthermore, they often include advertisement or discounts of some sort which can be seen as another key convention to attract audiences especially depending on the shows if they are aimed at more a D-E audience demographic whereas in magazines like radio times which are aimed at a slightly higher class don't need these sort of promotions
The cover lines often portray stories regarding whatever the 'hype' news show or controversial opinions on the actors featured. once again, It depends on the type of magazine; lower class magazine types are more likely to include celeberety gossip whilst higher class magazines are more likely to highlight key aspects of the tv show itself.
Here are a few examples to start you off:
Inside page feature
1) Now research inside page features from TV listings magazines. Post at least five images of magazine inside page features (they can be from different magazine genres if you are struggling to find TV listings magazine inside pages).

Here are some examples of inside page features:
2) Note down the design elements you notice in each inside page feature example you research and look for aspects you can use in your own work (e.g. use of main/secondary images, page design, pull quotes, picture captions etc.)
They often have the typogrophy in large chunks rather than summarising events, they go in depth in whatever it is they are talking about and vary from interviews with the cast or producers all the way to in depth analysis's of the tv show being discussed.
The images used are often very minimalistic and focus just on keeping the pages simple and related to the genre or topic of the page shown.
They usually advertise upcoming TV shows and events. They are usually within the same genre of the magazine or grouped together in specific sections.
3) What key conventions can you find across different types of inside page feature - e.g. headline, subheading, main image etc.
Page numbers: theyre the numbers that usually show up at the top or bottom corner of the page and indicate where the feature article is located within the magazine.
Planning and sketching
1) Plan the content and cover lines for your front cover:
- Title: MAGNOLIA MAGAZINE
- Slogan: WHOLE LOTTA T.V
- Cover image: A breakdown of one image from three different perspectives each focusing on a different angle/ part of the magazine.
- Main cover story/main flash: Interview with main insperation from the show, how he deals with the issues highlighted in the T.V show.
- Additional cover lines:
First interview with the rap sensation Playboi Carti ibhn Three years 'Pg.3'
Find out how Enzo and his small crew put together the Netflix hit show 'Hip-Hop heist' in just under a year!!
- Additional two smaller images:
Two separate angles of the main cast each one zooming in on mise en scene of each characters
- Font style / colour scheme, additional design aspects: Keeping it minimalistic, Black/White make it stand out/look professional whilst also keeping some more casual touches like a mixture of serif and sans serif typogrophy.
2) Plan the images you will use for the front cover - use CLAMPS. One main image and two smaller images required to meet the minimum content in the brief.
There will be three images on the front page, one main image of the cast not focusing on any character specifically but more to establish that the show is focused on this magazine, this will be the main flash. The smaller images will also be focused on the cast but from different perspectives.
3) Plan the content for your inside page feature:
- Subject of feature: Interview with the inspiration of the magazine and show (Playboi Carti)
- Headline: Title
- Subheading:
- Main image:
- Smaller images (need minimum of four across the three pages)
- Font style / colour scheme, additional design aspects:
4) Write the copy (words) you will use for the inside page feature - headline, subheading, article text.
MAGAZINE SCRIPT
On this month's issue of Magnolia magazine, our very own interviewer Aiden Smith managed to get the man, the inspiration of not only this magazine but also of the hit show Hip-Hop Heist here it is:
Interviewer: Welcome, Playboi Carti! It's a pleasure to have you here.
Playboi Carti: Thanks for having me, it's great to be here.
Interviewer: So, let's dive right in. I heard that the hit show "Hip-Hop Heist" reached out to you for help in creating a crime drama based on your life. How did you feel when you first heard about this project?
Playboi Carti: Man, I was blown away, to be honest. It was a crazy feeling knowing that my story and my music had inspired something like "Hip-Hop Heist." I mean, I grew up watching crime dramas and to have one based on my life? That's next level.
Interviewer: Absolutely, it must've been surreal. Can you tell us a bit about your initial thoughts when they approached you with the idea?
Playboi Carti: Yeah, when they popped up to me, I was intrested but you know how i am i like to be mysterious and keep my aura, you know? I wanted to make sure that they really understood my story and my journey in the industry. But after talking with the creators and seeing their vision for the show, I was all in. It's been an amazing collaboration so far.
Interviewer: That's fantastic to hear. It sounds like you really connected with the creative team behind "Hip-Hop Heist." How involved have you been in the development process?
Playboi Carti: I've been pretty hands-on, actually. I wanted to make sure that the show stayed true to my experiences while also being entertaining and engaging for viewers. So, I've been working closely with the writers and producers, sharing stories and giving them insight into my world. It's been a really collaborative effort, and I think that's what's going to make the show special.
Interviewer: It's great to hear that you've had such a significant role in shaping the show. Can you give us any hints about what viewers can expect from "Hip-Hop Heist"?
Playboi Carti: Oh, man, I don't want to give away too much, but I can tell you that it's going to be a wild ride. There's drama, there's action, there's suspense – everything you'd expect from a crime drama, but with a unique twist. And of course, there's going to be plenty of music, too. I've been working on some new tracks for the show, so fans can definitely expect some dope soundtracks.
Interviewer: That sounds incredible. I know fans are eagerly anticipating the premiere of "Hip-Hop Heist." Before we wrap up, is there anything else you'd like to share about the show or your involvement in it?
Playboi Carti: Just that I'm incredibly grateful for the opportunity to be a part of something like this. "Hip-Hop Heist" is more than just a TV show, issa a celebration of hip-hop culture and creativity. I hope that fans will enjoy watching it as much as we've enjoyed making it.
Interviewer: Well, I have no doubt that they will. Thank you so much for taking the time to chat with us today, Playboi Carti. We can't wait to see "Hip-Hop Heist" when it premieres.
Playboi Carti: Thanks again for having me. It's been a pleasure.
5) Plan the social media content you will include in your print work to create opportunities for digital convergence e.g. hashtags, social media details etc.
6) Research and select the font or typography you will use for your print work. This is a critical element of your print work - the brief requires a consistent house style running through all of your pages.
having It will have a mix of serif ans sans serif depending on what the page is. for example the front cover will use an alternitive sans serif to signify the magazine is modern and unique since its targeted to specific audience. Inside it will have a more traditional serif font as there will be an interview and i'd like to stick to traditional techniques
7) Produce an A4 sketch of your front cover design and scan it/upload a picture to your blog.
8) Produce A4 sketches of your inside page feature with clear layout of where headline, subheading, images and text will appear on the pages.
9) Create a new A4 portrait document in Adobe Photoshop (or Adobe InDesign) for your front cover design. Start to add text, check your font choices and put in the elements you have already planned/sketched.
Photoshoot
1) Who do you need to photograph for your front cover and inside page images? Remember, you need seven original images across the whole print production.
The photos are going to mainly consist of me in dark locations in order to accurately reflect the T.V show i'm promoting but there will also be one or two pictures of my friends who are also the cast.I'll use a variety of different settings like a fake interview for my 'interview page'
2) What camera shots do you need? Write a shot list for your photoshoots. Make sure you plan a variety of camera shots you will look to capture - medium shots, close-ups etc.
High angle shot- Myself in a corridor
Low angle shot- The cast in the park where the intro is set in
Variety of close ups- Myself, the cast, the interviewee and the interviewer
medium closeups-same idea as the close ups
3) Plan the mise-en-scene. What costume, props or make-up will you require for your photoshoots?
Costume- current teen fashion trends, slightly more professional clothing for the interview, might have 'thug' clothing if i use pictures of the antagonists.
Props- Table to be used for the interview, coffee, files, script
4) Finally, note down the time and date for your photoshoots. This may be inside or outside school (or a combination of both). You will have Media lesson time for this after the mock exams.
This is fluxuating especially due to having a bad fever since friday 23rd so i am doing this whenever i find the free time
