Statement of intent second draft

First draft:

The Netflix original series ‘Hip-Hop Heist’ is a Dynamic fusion of teenage rebellion, the deeper world of music and the world of crime behind music. This unique crime genre draws inspiration from the real life events that happen behind the main star ‘Playboi Carti’s’ music career and the problems that are caused in the deeper side of his fanbase. It has been made in order to create a visually immersive and emotionally engaging narrative that explores these real problems.

The three minute clip that I will use for this project will be the first 3 minutes of season 1 episode one. It will start with a flash forward of the trio protagonists in a dire situation for the first minute of the clip, then for the next two minutes of the clip we will be brought back to their school where we will get introductions to the main characters Sel,Reggie and Ray. As stated, the setting used for this extract will be a school environment for the present day section of the clip and for the flash forward will be in a dark room where the trio are accessing the dark side of the internet and will be more digitally immersed for the flash forward. The sound will switch between diegetic and non diegetic and the soundtrack of the music played throughout this movie is entirely composed with music including Playboi Carti or Playboi Carti instrumentals, I have also found some special sound effects that make the scenes more immersive.

With the given age rating of 12, i have decided to take a less traditional approach to a crime genre as i felt as though many of the audience pleasures from traditional crime dramas go against the BBFC film regulations and so instead i focused on a plot where it is more enjoyable to a younger-adult audience and that is through music. I liked this idea since with music, there are no age limits and so you can expand your target audience. Also, I feel as though most teenagers will be able to relate with the show as it is about teenage life and composed by a teenager. Although, if the genre of music isn't for certain people, then the crime genre aspect will be sure to hook them in.

In terms of theories that can be linked with my drama, there are a few. Mainly, id focus on the cultivation theory which suggests that media consumers especially in television will depict the real world the same way as if it was in the media they consumed. This will be able to link with my show as these are real things that the targeted audience do in real life and with the message the show provides it can hopefully steer the viewers away from doing what is done in the series.

A key part of this film will focus on lighting making sure that when we are looking at their school life the camera shots are calm and the editing is normal paced but when we switch to where they are exploring the deeper side of the mystery, the light becomes dimmer and the grayscale increases and so on in order to explain the mood. Another thing is the costumes of the characters, they will also change from in school to out of school to once again be able to relate with a younger audience and even older audiences who have to be monitored on the clothes they wear to work/ school. The clothes and colours of the scenes will often depict the type of characters that they are and how they currently feel.

Second draft:

In this second statement of intent, i'll be describing it differently due to a change in the planning however the storyline stays similarly the same. The story is an exciting mix of the criminal underworld, the deeper realm of music, and teenage rebellion. The real-life incidents that take place behind the scenes of the celebrity "Playboi Carti," and the issues that arise in the most intimate parts of his fan base serve as the basis for this distinctive criminal genre. I have aimed at what might seem a niche audience however is quite popular amongst the targeted audience which is teenagers to young adults (the median demographic of Playboi Carti fans). As a member of this demographic, I wish to make this immersive and relatable in order to construct certain audience pleasures more specifically vicarious pleasure as I hope to create a show that audiences like myself can hope to experience through the fictional characters. This is a hybrid of crime and drama whilst it may lack some conventions due to its uniqueness and separation to other shows of similar genres. It is also fiction but includes some truth within it as a sign to wake the audience up to things they might be doing and explaining how it negatively affects the artists they listen to.

In this 3 minute clip you will be shown the beginning of the first episode. This will be opened with the netflix introduction followed by the self constructed introduction to the show with a range of editing techniques and camera shots. The reasoning behind this is that whilst the introduction may not seem like any other crime shows, it's important to remember that its the audience that are watching this and need a good hook at the beginning in order to allow themselves to emerge in the show. After the introduction is finished, you will be introduced to the main cast being Jordan, Reggie and Y.S who are all late teenagers (18) who have just left school to pursue their music career inspired by their idol Playboi Carti . The reason that this has become an all male cast is to contrast the current film and tv industry that say that we need to include a strong female cast and express other opinions however i will be recording everything based on my personal and others experiences as i mentioned i did want this show to be as relatable to the audience as possible rather than having to make it less immersive just for the non targeted audience to give the show a chance.

We are introduced to them as the stereotypical teenage group of boys hanging out at Y.S’s house playing video games. The ‘leader’ of their group (Jordan) then makes a comment on how they finished school and are free and they’re still doing the same things as they were in high school referring to them playing games. Jordan then puts his controller down and turns off the console whilst Reggie was still playing and suggested that they all go out. They decide to go to a skatepark but Jordan seems to be the only person that skates. There's a suspicious group also sitting at the skatepark playing music loudly whilst the protagonist crew realise the voice sounds like Playboi carti but isn't a released song. They are confused but decide to ignore it. The hooded group of what seem to be according to Propp's theory of character types; anti heroes, listening to music are still sat whilst the main cast are on the other side of the park. A police car then drives down by the road with screeching sirens. The mysterious group thinking the police were looking for them get up and run away. Jordan, who was skating, realises something dropped from one of their pockets and calls his friends to investigate. They find a usb stick labelled ‘LEAKS’. This is where the 3 minute clip ends.

The clip Contains many conventions of crime and drama. I feel if this all goes as planned, this scene will successfully submerge the audience with the combination of action codes, enigma codes and cliffhangers. I plan to use the lighting as an enigma code as when they’re outside the light will be lowkey and the camerawork/editing will switch from slow paced to fast paced when needed in order to build up suspense.Because of the of-com restrictions, it will be more difficult to use makeup effectively. In the film industry, makeup is typically used to highlight wounds, and because of the 12 rating, we are unable to portray blood or similar gory scenes which i guess wont be much in this scene but in what I originally wanted to record, it would have been a problem to use makeup in certain ways. Alternatively, I might also use recordings  from halloween to show makeup using Halloween desguises. This can serve as a metaphor for how those who work on our production keep their identities hidden and behave in secret.
