lighting

1) Still image analysis

Look at the still images on slides 33-37 of the Film Language Powerpoint linked above. Copy the images into your blog and answer the following questions for each image:

  1. Identify examples of high and low-key lighting.
  2. Say which depict topback or under lighting.
  3. What effects are created by the lighting in each image?
This photo uses lighting effectively. The setting of this photograph is in a dark room however the use of high key lighting through the use of smoke illuminates the room as well as adding a mysterious atmosphere, this has connotations of "femme fatal" as the woman hidden in the darkness of the room has been exposed by the cigarette she has smoked, which contrasts against most female stereotypes. Back lighting has also been used well as the shadows have been effectively casted in order to build character suspension this could be a use of enigma codes as its using suspense in order to draw the targeted audience in order to make them interested in the product.

Similar to the last product, this poster also contains features linked to fame fatal, the prop of a cigarette has been used to emphasise the fact that this woman is going against the common stereotype that women are kept out of mystery and live thrift given lifestyle. top lighting was nicely used by outcasting the cigarette as well as her face. she has her whole body engulfed by the shadow however her face remains visible which allows us to see her facial expression which we could link to her being scared possibly why she ism 'hiding' within the shadows

contrary to the last two images, this one contains close to no shadow as his whole body is standing out. usually, something filled with a bright light connotes a good character or a protagonist however the use of underlighting has been utilized in a way where shadows were cast all around the character's face only revealing his “evil look” this contrasts with my past points as when a character has their face covered, it’s usually not for a good cause. This could be the producers hinting that through the use of character codes this could be the non-hero due to the false positive representation.

I particularly like this media product due to the suspense alone this lightning created. The actor has been placed on this set to do nothing aside from looking in the distance and which is also a factor of the typical “superhero pose” however this has been slightly shifted after lighting has been effectively cast to hide him as a character and place more focus on the dystopian type of setting and the rain showering over this character. this product contains many mysteries almost as though they are hidden in the shadows leading us to follow this media source to find out more of this product(enigma and action codes)

This media product has been produced in a way that makes us as an audience think that this belongs in a horrific genre due to the lighting allowing us to see the character have a mortified look on her face. this also contains of a medium close-up whilst allowing us to see her bright white setting starting to be engulfed in shadows, back-lighting is also used well to show a small piece of the antagonist's shadow towering over the helpless woman.

In this media product, the lighting is divided through the curtain with the two characters in the frame making out with each other, this scene in a dimly lit room could have been used in order to follow the guidelines on public advertisement and television that would keep the readers / watchers hooked through sexual presentation. Lighting has also been used to cast out the characters faces in order to use a sense of mystery and discretion.

In this, the media product is in black and white which really emphasises the distinct differences in light and shadow, the back-lighting was used in order to male the people walking seem hidden in shadows due to the lighting making them seem like outcasts of a person maybe used to strike fear into whoever they are approaching with the casted shadows that makes them look a lot bigger than what they are.

similar to the 5th media product, this one also consists of clear connotations of a horrific genre. The lighting in this media product allows us to see the character's frightened expression on her face, which leads us as viewers to believe that it fits in a horrific genre. picture includes a medium close-up as well, enabling us to observe how her stark white surroundings is beginning to be overtaken by shadows.

Finally, find a YouTube clip that fits the film noir genre and embed it under your research (the clip can be classic noir from the 1950s or something more recent - neo-noir). How does the clip's lighting fit the film noir genre?

In this iconic film, i feel as though despite the fact that it is in black and white, the lighting shots used have been very impressive in terms of presenting the characters. for example, in the beginning of the clip, we can see a member of a group leave the nicely lit place towards the place covered in knives where coincidentally it was covered in shadows, although this is a small detail, it still uses back lighting in order to create shadows in areas where something bad is about to happen, this was a great use of action codes. The scene then shifts at 00:45 to where a man in a dimly lit bathroom with no clue that the man who is set out to kill him is hidden within the shadows and positioned in a way in which the actors are unaware of whats happening but we are meaning that through the lighting he has effectively carried out dramatic irony
