MISE-EN-SCENE (analysis)

1) Find a distinctive still image and write an analysis of the mise-en-scene. Use each of the aspects you've learned in the lesson.

This is an image taken of a concert hosted by "playboy carti" it has clear symbolisation's that connect with his genre and style of music. For example, lighting has been used here in a way to make the stage seem dark and red, this could reference to one of his better known songs "whole lotta red". his genre of music is a variation of hip hop/rap whilst he also includes darker references. Furthermore, makeup has been used in order to present himself in a horrifying way. this has also been done with how his setting was made as he is in a foggy and ominous setting which is controversial as in a concert the performer is expected to make their presence known. He has also effectively used his costume as the colour scheme consists mainly of all black which we know can correlate to a darker meaning  (eg:rock, evil). Overall I feel as though this music artist has successfully presented himself in a way that correlates with his performance through amazing use of MISE-EN-SCENE.

2) Find TWO film or TV extracts on YouTube from different genres (e.g. horror, sci-fi, costume drama). Embed them in your blogpost and write a comparison of the mise-en-scene in each.

Karate kid(mise en scene)

This segment of a film called "the karate kid" has used MISE-EN-SCENE in a strong sense however not so obvious that everyone would be able to pick up. To start off, the costume here is crucial as through the start of the movie "Dre" who is the young boy in the training has always been seen with his jacket on covering himself which could be used to symbolize weakness which could be why when he was ready to give up on the training, he took his jacket with him and was probably going to put it on outside after leaving. When he's stopped by his teacher, there is a pause of silence, and where we can see the cinematography has used an establishing shot to show that this was training under harsh sunlight. make-up has also been used effectively as at the start of the clip his sweat wasn't visible but then when he engaged in a practice battle with his teacher to truly see what he has become is where we could see the sweat covering his body. This could have been used to symbolise his hard work and improvement from when he was ready to leave up to this point. Furthermore, the lighting was discretely changed as they went from being under the sun with birds chirping to a darker environment with more suspenseful music overlaying.

The Amazing Spider-Man 2(miss en scene)

In this opening scene, mise en scene has also been used really well one of the biggest factors used here was the camera angles used to utilize cinematography to their full potential. what I mean by this is during the part where Spider-Man is “web-slinging” through the streets of new york, it starts with establishing shots including Spider-Man towering over new york and as he launches himself off the edge of a skyscraper, the camera closes in on spider-man in a way to make it seem as if we the audience are falling with him. This effect has been used throughout the segment of him swinging through the streets making the audience almost feel as if we were with or were Spider-Man. This could also have been hinting towards the quote from the creator of spider-man “anyone can wear the mask”.Costume has also been clearly used through the iconic Spider-Man costume.
